President Donald Trump made a promise Monday night on Twitter to the people of Greenland: He will not plop a giant golden Trump Tower into the middle of one of its picturesque villages.
The president posted a tweet showing a picture that had been doctored to look as if the Tower had become part of the landscape in response to reports he is still interested in buying the remote island nation, and added: “I promise not to do this to Greenland!”
Son Eric posted the same photo on his Instagram page earlier Monday, with the caption: “I don’t know about you guys but I love the concept of buying Greenland.”
Trump over the weekend said the idea of buying Greenland, an autonomous possession of Denmark’s, was a “strategically interesting plan,” but “not number one on the burner,” while responding to The Wall Street Journal story he had floated the idea during meetings. He also compared the purchase to a “large real estate deal.”
“Strategically for the United States, it would be nice,” he told reporters at his Bedminster, N.J. golf resort. “We’re a big ally of Denmark, and we help Denmark, and we protect Denmark.”
But officials from Greenland and Denmark say there is no way Trump can float them an offer they cannot refuse.
“Greenland is rich in valuable resources such as minerals, the purest water and ice, fish stocks, seafood, renewable energy and is a new frontier for adventure tourism,” the country’s foreign ministry said in a tweet last week. “We’re open for business, not for sale.”
