The White House is doing the right thing by refusing to participate in the Democrats’ “sham impeachment process,” House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, D-Calif., said in a statement after the release of the Trump administration’s scathing letter to House leaders Tuesday.
“House Democrats have wanted to undo the results of the 2016 election for three years, and now they’re rushing a sham impeachment process,” McCarthy said in a press release. “President [Donald] Trump is right to call out this rushed process because Democrats refuse to protect the transparency and basic fairness that have been integral to previous impeachment proceedings.”
In the letter, written by White House counsel Pat Cipollone, the administration and Trump “reject your baseless, unconstitutional efforts to overturn the democratic process. Your unprecedented actions have left the president with no choice. In order to fulfill his duties to the American people, the Constitution, the Executive Branch, and all future occupants of the Office of the Presidency, President Trump and his administration cannot participate in your partisan and unconstitutional inquiry under these circumstances.”
McCarthy noted he recently wrote to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., “saying that if Democrats plan to impeach Trump, he should be able to defend himself, with the minority Republicans be given the same rights minority parties were allowed in impeachment proceedings against former Presidents Richard Nixon and Bill Clinton.”
“The American people deserve to see their representative’s vote on impeachment,” McCarthy added. “Sadly, it’s the American people who are hurt the most by this erratic, unfair impeachment because Democrats are more interested in tearing down this president than they are in building up this nation.”
